Sentence Pattern | Simply Explained with Rules and Examples

Sentence pattern

Subject:
              The person who does the action in the sentence is the subject of the sentence.
              Ex:
                        The cat killed the mouse.

Verb:
              Verb is a word expressing the action. (Or) an action words are called verb.
              Ex:
                        The cat killed a mouse

Object:
              The word which receives the action from the subject is the object of the sentence.
              Ex:
                        The cat killed a mouse.

Direct object [D.O] [things]:
              The phrase or word which answers the question “what?” is called direct object.

Indirect speech [I.O] [person]:
              The phrase or word which answers the question “to whom” is called indirect object.
              Ex:
                        I /gave/ him/ a pen.
I gave –       “what”         a pen --- thing [D.O]
              “to whom”       him   --- persons       [I.O]

Complement:
              The word (Or) phrase which completes the sense (Or) meaning of the sentence is called complement.
              Ex:
                        She became a teacher.    [Teacher — Complement]
              It comes after the “Be” form verbs
                        She is a teacher.
              Professionals (Or) Careers are complement
                        Student, captain, president, doctor, teacher
              Colors are complement
                        Red, blue, white, yellow, etc…
              Adjectives are complement
                        Happy, angry, sad, etc…
              It comes after main verbs like
                        Become, elected, feel, grew, get, seems, made, etc…

Subject complement:
              If the complement tells us about the subject is called subject complement.
              Ex:
                        Ravi is a doctor.  [Doctor – tell about the subject]

Object complement:
              If the complement tells us about the object is called object complement.
              Ex:
                        We named him Hari. [it tells about the object]
                        Reading made him a complete man
                        They elected him leader.
                        They made her angry.
                        Mother keeps her kitchen clean.
                        They named his child Ram.
                        He got his shoes dirty.

Adjunct [A]:
              An adjunct is a word (Or) phrase, which provides answers to the questions “How?”, “when?”, “where?”, “why?”
              Ex:
                        They came by bus.  [How]
                        My friend came house yesterday. [When]
                        I met her in Chennai last week. [Where]
                        She entered the church to pray. [Why]
              An adjunct adds some additional meaning to a sentence.

Adverbial [A]:
              Adverbs end with “-ly
                        He drives the car slowly.

Ex:
              1.     SV  à I wrote / Birds fly.
             2.     SVA à Birds flew in the sky.
             3.     SVAA à Birds flew in the sky yesterday.
             4.     ASVA à Yesterday birds flew in the sky.
             5.     SVAAA à they read regularly at home during holidays.
             6.     ASV à In the morning they left.
             7.     SVACA à He is now a doctor in the states.
             8.     SAVCA à The clerk often becomes in different at work.
                          She sometimes becomes moody in the evening.
             9.     SVO à I wrote a letter.
            10.     SVOA à I wrote a letter last year.
            11.     SVOAA à I wrote a letter in Chennai last year.
           12.    ASOVA à Last year I wrote a letter in Chennai.
           13.     ASVO à Last year I wrote letter.
           14.     SVIODO à I wrote my friend a letter.
           15.     SVIODOA à I wrote my friend a letter last year.
           16.     SVIODOAA à I wrote my friend a letter in Chennai last year.
           17.    ASVIODOA à Last year I wrote my friend a letter in Chennai.
           18.    SVC à I was a student.
           19.    SVCA à I was a student last year.
           20.  SVCAA à I was a student in Chennai last year.
           21.    ASVCA à Last year I was a student in class.
           22.   SVOC à I named him Raja.
           23.   SVOCA à I named him Raja last year.
           24.   SVOCAA à I named him Raja in Chennai last year.
           25.  ASVOCA à Last year I named him Raja in Chennai.
           26.  VC à Keep Quite.
                       Be careful.
                       Be silent.
           27.   VCA à Be calm in the class.
