         The author's father responded to his wife's interest in music by buying a brand new piano. The author's mother had never been close to a piano except at the Catholic Kindergarten she had attended. His mother squealed with delight when she came to know that she was being gifted a brand new piano
  

2. The course of mum's life changed after the arrival of the piano. How?

         After the arrival of the piano, Mum to teach herself to play. Mum became obsessed with her piano. Everyday she plinked and plonked and in a month's time she started belting out a tune. All the neighbours gathered around her in sing along parties. This made Mum feel like a princess and she was delighted at all the attention she was receiving.
  

3. 'Practice made Mum's skill in playing the piano perfect'. Substantiate the statement with details from the story?

        Mum became obsessed with her piano. Everyday she plinked and plonked between cooking and housework. Within a month she was belting out a tune to the amazement of everybody in the street. Dad was also pleased as punch with Mum's tenacity and her professional pianist in a month's time.



  

4. What made Mum popular in the neighbourhood?

        In three months, Mum became an accomplished pianist holding sing-along parties. All the neighbours gathered in the lounge to croon songs. Mum felt like a princess and was delighted at all the attention she was receiving from the neighbours.
  

5. Mum did not enjoy playing the neighbour's pianos. Why?

        Though the neighbours invited Mun to visit their place and play their piano, Mum was not interested. She could not go to their houses for the sake of the piano.
  

6. Though terribly missed the piano, she faced the situation with a positive frame of mind. What light does it throw on her attitude?

        Mum terribly missed the piano. But she never mentioned the piano except once. When Dad got a job at the accounting firm, she mentioned to her son that it was good to have got rid of the piano; otherwise Dad would not have been able to study with her playing the piano. This shows her positive frame of mind, tenacity, and determination.
